About

Our client is seeking to contract with a highly motivated Materials Engineer to support the engineering efforts of the Materials and Chemistry Discipline team. This role will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers focused on materials processing, supply chain development and supplier qualification for next generation material and components for sodium cooled fast reactors. You will be responsible for performing experiments to determine coefficients of friction and wear rates for materials to be used in the reactor, including all pre and post characterization of the samples. You will be responsible for producing data to be used for the design of the reactor, as well as down selection and qualification of advanced coating materials for sodium cooled reactor operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform experiments to determine coefficients of friction and wear rates for materials to be used in the reactor
  • Operate a test apparatus that is part of a high temperature liquid metallic sodium loop 
  • Perform hands-on experiments in a glove box
  • Characterize test specimens using optical microscopy, profilometry, SEM-EDS, and other analytical techniques before and after testing
  • Generate test reports documenting tribology tests and resulting data to document new knowledge related to reactor design and qualifications
  • Provide material selection guidance for the client's reactor development programs

Key Qualifications and Skills

 

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience with a B.S. degree; or an advanced degree with related experience, or equivalent experience. A degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline is desired.
  • Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience is required
  • A solid understanding of tribology as well as the design and conduct of tribology tests is strongly desired
  • Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems
  • The successful candidate will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
  • Actual position starting level and title will be determined based on assessment of qualifications.
